Lee Sipe
 

Lee Sipe has lived in Columbia, South Carolina, since 1971, and has taught basketry at the University of South Carolina, Lander University, Midlands Technical College, and the Tri-District Arts Consortium at Columbia College. She initially began using pine needles to make intricate vessels, and later expanded into making vessels using both pottery and pine needles.  Lee now also makes clay sculptures and intricate vessels using copper wire.  She also makes vessels from reeds and wire mesh.  Lee’s latest awards include First Place Three Dimensional and Photography, Trenholm Artists Guild 32nd Annual Exhibit – 2013, Columbia, SC; Merit Award, S.C. Festival of Flowers Annual Juried Show – 2013, Greenwood, SC; Second Place Open Media – Professional, Fine Arts Juried Exhibition, South Carolina State Fair – 2012, Columbia, SC; Honorable Mention, Palmetto Hands Juried Exhibition - 2012, North Charleston, SC. First Place Open Media Professional, S.C. State Fair – 2011, Columbia, S.C.; Outstanding Merit Award, Palmetto Hands Fine Craft Exhibition – 2011, Charleston, S.C.; Best in Show, Carolina’s Got Art – 2010, Charlotte, N.C.; and Best in Show, Palmetto Hands - 2010, Charleston, S.C. Her work has been featured in Design! A Lively Guide to Design Basics by Steven Aimone;Baskets – A Book for Makers and Collectors, by Billie Ruth Suddeth;  Pine Needle Basketry, from Forest Floor to Finished Product, by Judy Mallow; Fiber Art; Southern Living; Columbia Metropolitan Magazine, and The Crafts Report.  Lee’s work was selected for inclusion in Triennial, 2004, a project of the SC State Museum and the SC Arts Commission featuring three years of contemporary art in South Carolina.  Her work was also included in The Red Clay Survey, a triennial exhibition of contemporary southern art by the Huntsville Museum of Art in 2005 and 2007.
