Skorepa

Born in 1954, the son of a Math and PE teacher, Skorepa kept busy as a boy singing, playing the accordion and guitar, and tennis. He studied at Prague’s School of Graphic Arts and a four year course at Ceske Budejovice’s Jihoceske tiskarny in graphic arts and lithography. His talent in singing led him to become a soloist in Prague’s Chamber Opera in 1985. Yet, he never gave up painting. Studio work and open-air painting took up most of his free time. After the communist regime fell to pieces, private galleries began to spring up and business started to bloom. In 1990, when Prague’s Chamber Opera ceased to exist, he had to decide which one of his talents – singing or painting – to follow. Jiri Skorepa’s paintings are realistic. He focuses mainly on the landscapes of Vysocona and Southern Bohemia. He also employs images of Prague and his travels abroad. There have been about thirty-five exhibitions of Skorepa’s paintings in galleries and exhibitions (at home and abroad) by 2000.
